With unparalleled access to the many amenities that comprise the community as well as the surrounding area, the Shawnessy neighborhood was first established in 1981 and has gone on to become one of the more attractive neighborhoods that Calgary has to offer. With a population just under 10,000, the majority of the residential properties in Shawnessy are single family detached homes. What’s great about this community is that firstly, MacLeod Trail lies to its’ immediate east and acts as a direct route to the downtown core allowing for a quick way in/out of the area for those that work in the downtown area or those that wish to visit. On the opposite end of the spectrum, any residents in the Shawnessy area have access to Fish Creek Provincial Park to the north and to Shawinigan Park located right in the heart of Shawnessy.

Public school students in the neighborhood attend Janet Johnstone elementary, Samuel W. Shaw junior high, and Centennial senior high school. Meanwhile, Catholic school students regularly attend Father Doucet elementary, Our Lady Of Peace junior high, and Bishop O’Byrne senior high school.

Acting as an amenity complimentary to the attractive amount of green space in the neighborhood, Shawnessy Centre is located in the far southeastern corner of the community. Acting as host to some of Canada’s largest retail stores, these include Home Depot, Safeway, Co-Op, the Real Canadian Superstore, Canadian Tire, and Winners among others. Shawnessy Centre offers residents a comprehensive shopping experience; there are over 120 shops featuring a wide range of services in lifestyle and entertainment.

Transportation is never an issue no matter where you are in Calgary and in Shawnessy, the community goes a long way to accommodate its’ residents any way they can. The Shawnessy LRT station gives residents the opportunity to zip in and out of the neighborhood at their leisure. Calgary Transit also has stops featured throughout the community for those that may not have a schedule correlating with that of the LRT line.

With all the opportunities available to the 10,000 residents in Shawnessy, there’s no wonder why it’s one of the top communities in the city.

Whether it’s for the green environment, the downtown access, the close proximity to a major shopping centre, or for the experience that its’ unique location is able to provide, nearly any person can be accommodated through the activities and utilities found here in the Shawnessy neighborhood.
