Oakridge

A residential neighborhood in the far southwest of the city, Oakridge is bordered to the north by 90th avenue, to the east by 24th street, and the Tsuu T’ina first nation reserve to its’west. This is a community of over 5,500 residents with a deep admiration of being surrounded by trees, leaves, pathways, and trails that lead far, wide, and up high to some truly exquisite views. The land was first established as a Calgary neighborhood in 1968 with the majority of its’ development coming in the decade that followed. Oakridge predominantly comprises of single-family detached homes that were built during this period of time. The neighborhood is south of the Glenmore Reservoir. Oakridge residents enjoy the amenities that its’ location offers including the boat docks, hiking trails in the Weaselhead Flats area, the Glenmore Park, the Heritage Park Historical Village, and the views that can extend as far as the eye can see.

Public school students of Oakridge have the privilege of attending the Louis Riel elementary and junior high school, found right in Oakridge itself. Meanwhile, high school students are designated to attend Henry Wise Wood senior high school. Those registered in the Catholic school district attend St. Cyril elementary and junior high, and Bishop Grandin senior high school.

Needless to say, this neighborhood is quite a ways away from the downtown core. The nearest opportunity to shop and to get groceries is just a few minutes down Southland Drive until one reaches Macleod Trail. Take a left on Macleod and it will lead right into a multitude of shops, restaurants, businesses, and grocers. This is where the majority of Oakridge residents are known to frequent when making common purchases.

For those that don’t have transportation parked out in their driveway, Calgary Transit has over two dozen stops sprinkled all throughout the community.

Oakridge is a neighborhood for those looking for a place to come home to that is a bit of an escape from the rest of Calgary. It’s a somewhat more secluded community than others with significantly more nature to explore for those willing to explore it. To put it simply, Oakridge has the feel of a small town to it while still being within city limits. A graceful escape in a charming landscape – this is Oakridge.
