Discover Ridge Community Information and Description

Originally established in the early 1990s, the neighborhood of Discovery Ridge now boasts a population of 4,500 residents. What originally began as a gated community with the name New Discovery, Discovery Ridge would go on to be re-conceptualized by developed Mac Radford before being sold to the City of Calgary in the late 1980s. Discovery Ridge is set in Calgary’s southwest in between the Glenmore Trail to the north, 69th Street to the east, Rocky View County and the county limits to the west, and the Elbow River and the Tsuu T’ina first nation reserve to the south. The neighborhood remains a high class neighborhood with a median household income of approximately $130,000 with no low income residents in the area. According to the latest statistics, none of the housing is used for renting and nearly all buildings are single family detached homes or estate homes.

Discovery Ridge’s public school students attend Jennie Elliot Elementary, Bishop Pinkham Junior High, and either Western Canada Senior High or Central Memorial Senior High. Meanwhile the area’s Catholic school students attend John Costello Elementary, St. Michael and/or St. Gregory Junior High, and Bishop Carroll and/or St. Mary’s Senior High.

Griffith Woods Environmental Park borders Discovery Ridge and contains over ninety-three hectares of nature trails that welcome walkers, cyclists, and horseback riders every day. The residents that need to be get anywhere in Calgary, the Glenmore Trail acts as a direct route to the downtown area or one can wish to drive the opposite way to get a head’s start on their way to the Rocky Mountains. Well known for its seclusion and a rural atmosphere, Discovery Ridge has a nice setting where the limits of the city meet the country.  The neighborhood continues to grow in new developments and takes full advantage of the scenic area giving residents a unique backdrop to their lives.
