Britannia Community Description
With a population of just under 800 residents and growing, Calgary’s own Britannia is a residential neighbourhood rich in discovery. Nuzzled into Calgary’s southwest, Britannia is located between Elbow Drive to the east, 50th Avenue to the south, Elbow River to the west, and Britannia Drive to the north. Originally established in the late 1950s, the vast majority of the neighbourhood occurred in its initial decade of existence. The elegant neighbourhood carries a British theme throughout – with not only its identifying name but also with street names such as Coronation Drive, Edinburgh Boulevard, and Elizabeth Road. Offering a combination of rural charm and quiet city sophistication, the community of Britannia continues to maintain a strong population as it heads into its next decade.
Britannia’s public school students attend Elbow Park Elementary, Rideau Park Junior High or Mount Royal Junior High, and then graduate at Henry Wise Wood Senior High School. Meanwhile Catholic school students are assigned to attend St. Augustine Elementary and Junior High before finishing their remaining grades at Bishop Grandin Senior High School.
There are very few low income residents in the neighbourhood as Britannia boasts a median household income of approximately $120,000. Roughly 20% of the housing is used for renting purposes. Those lucky enough to own properties within Britannia’s borders benefit from views of the downtown city as well as the majestic Rocky Mountains which act as its backdrop.
There are a variety of amenities nearby as well. Off of 48th Avenue is Britannia Plaza which brings together several small businesses, shops, and a Starbucks to offer residents somewhere nearby. For those that are looking towards what’s downtown, Elbow Drive provides immediate access to downtown Calgary which lies only 4 kilometres away. There are also various parks – including Stanley Park, River Park, Crescent Park, and Sandy Beach Park – throughout the nearby area which allows residents the opportunity to make it out into their local communities, and see and meet other residents. The Calgary Golf and Country Club is nearby as well.
Calgary Transit offers several stops along Elbow Drive to assist residents in making their way out to other parts of the city.
Southwest Calgary is rich in history, with much of the city’s development throughout the 1950s and 1960s happening in this area. Britannia is a part of that history. Welcoming to young and old alike, Britannia is a quaint and comfortable community. With a gateway to the busier parts of the city awaiting residents in Elbow Drive as well as unlimited recreational opportunities in the natural land that surrounds them, Britannia offers an unspoiled residential environment that is sure to please one and all.
